For more than thirty years, The Christological Controversy has been an essential text for courses in theology, church history, and early Christianity that seek to better understand the development of Christology from its earliest roots to the Council of Chalcedon in 451. The volume gives modern readers an idea entry point into the issues by presenting clear, fresh translations of the most important primary sources, along with simple and informative introductions to explain the context of the writings.
Richard A Norris, Jr. (1930-2005) was Professor of Church History at Union Theological Seminary in New York. Robert C Saleris research fellow and director of the Lilly Endowment Clergy Renewal Programs at Christian Theological Seminary in Indianapolis. He has published widely in Pro Ecclesia, Dialog, Christian Century, American Journal of Theology and Philosophy, and Currents in Theology and Mission. In addition, he has contributed to recent editions of The Christological Controversy and The Trinitarian Controversy from Fortress. This volume is a revision of a dissertation completed at the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago under the supervision of Vitor Westhelle.
