One Woman is an inspired collaboration between photographer and muse. Through John Botte's masterful eye, Elicia Ho, a former ballerina, has realised a lyrical, visual diary of her becoming. The result is a stunning, dual meditation on a photographer's relationship to subject and craft, and a woman's intimate, empowering exploration of her sense of self and multifaceted identity. Revealing multiple aspects of character and personality, these photographic depictions are odes to real, fictional, or historical individuals and archetypes who have inspired, formed, or shaped the life of one woman. An invitation to celebrate the many layers of one's own being, Botte's captivating photographs are accompanied by Ho's insightful capsule texts about each persona portrayed in this homage to the many and varied people who, together, form the myriad facets of one woman. Also included are technical notes by Botte detailing his exclusive choice of Leica's M Monochrom camera for this body of work, as well as his use of vintage optics for the differing moods and eras evoked in these images. Former NYPD officer John Botte never showed up to work without his Leica M camera..., an attribute that garnered him nationwide fame...with his project Aftermath: Unseen 9/11 Photos by a New York City Cop. Years later, Botte has transitioned his focus and creative vision to a profoundly intimate and personal subject: his...muse..., the former ballerina Elicia Ho. His new book, One Woman, is an ode to the vintage silhouetting of 1930s portraiture, and to real, fictional, and historical female characters. From...icons and activists like Josephine Baker and Gloria Steinem, to relatives like her American mother and Chinese aunts, Ho delves into self-exploration and empowerment to reveal her multifaceted identity...The decision to collaborate on this project came spontaneously, as Botte requested Ho pose to test out his 75mm lens one evening...Beside the images, which have a dark, quintessential film noir look, a variety of capsule texts written by Ho describe each persona along with their influence on her life.--New York Magazine
