Paid in Sunsets: The Making of a National Park Ranger is the story of one park ranger's journey from Gettysburg to Denali and back, raising a family, contending with bears, and rescuing hikers, in four national parks over more than 30 years. Interspersed with real-time journal entries, these reflective, engaging, stories illustrate the real life of a national park ranger.
Tom Habecker began his career in the National Park Service as a student intern at Gettysburg National Military Park. He spent 11 years at Yosemite National Park, 11 years in Glacier, and 15 years at Denali National Park. After 36 years of federal service, Tom retired to Bozeman, Montana. His writing has been featured in collections including The Wonder of It All: 100 Stories from the National Park Service (which takes its title from Tom's contributed story) and Backpacker Magazine's 25th Anniversary Collector's Edition in 1998.
