Engaging and entertaining, "UFO Sightings" is the most up-to-date overview of the UFO phenomenon, a controversy that gains strength with each new report of strange happenings in the sky. Written from the sceptical perspective, and applying the scientific method to the cases explored, this book differs greatly from the proparanormal tomes widely available today. The book is unique because it gives the reader a broad overview of the world of UFOlogy, dealing with most major cases and trends, while offering references and commentary to provide a clear perspective. Incidents and photographs are scrutinised within a framework of objective science. Included are the Jimmy Carter UFO sighting; the "abduction" of Betty and Barney Hill; the incidents at Exeter; the Men in Black; messages from space; mothmen, wolf girls, and transparent apes; films; the UFO blitz of Mexico; and the comparisons to sightings of fairies and witches in colonial times.
Robert Sheaffer (born 1949) is an American freelance writer and skeptic. He is a paranormal investigator of unidentified flying objects (UFOs), having researched many sightings and written critiques of the hypothesis that UFOs are alien spacecraft. In addition to UFOs, his writings cover topics such as Christianity, academic feminism, the scientific theory of evolution, and creationism. He is the author of six books. Sheaffer wrote for Skeptical Inquirer (where he contributed the regular "Psychic Vibrations" column), 1977- 2017. Fate Magazine, and Spaceflight. He was a founding member (with Philip J. Klass and James Oberg) of the UFO Subcommittee of the Committee for Skeptical Inquiry, and is a fellow of that organization. He is the author of six books, including The UFO Verdict, Resentment Against Achievement, and The Making of the Messiah.
