Breast cancer survivor Patty Gelman recounts her journey through "Cancer World" in a series of anecdotes, chronicling her year-long struggle with the disease in an upbeat, colloquial, and often candidly funny way. Typical of her unyieldingly positive attitude is the way that Gelman breaks the news to her mother, also a cancer survivor: "Well, it's my turn now!"
A graduate of The Park School of Buffalo in 1966 and Boston University in 1970, Patty Cohen Gelman returned to Buffalo to teach Language Arts and Social Studies at Park School; married Warren Gelman in 1972; raised three daughters; and worked in the development office at Park as the Alumni Director. After her breast-cancer experience in 2002, Patty wrote her book Humor After the Tumor because she is a strong believer in the healing power of sharing stories. As a breast-cancer advocate, she welcomes opportunities to speak to groups as she offers encouragement and helps raise awareness.
