The Shared Joy of Early Swimming from 0-4 Years
- Your baby's introduction to water, from the first bath to the first visit to a beach or a swimming pool, should be one of fun and happiness: early experience provides the foundation for the development of invaluable aquatic skills. In this new book, expert baby swimming instructor Francoise Babira Freedman offers a practical guide to the essential early practices of aquatic development, from birth to the fourth year. Inspired by the gentle parenting practices of the Amazon, where children are not 'taught to swim', but rather encouraged to experiment and discover buoyancy and movement in the water, Water Parenting gives parents the information and practical skills to introduce the foundations of swimming to their children.
- Francoise Barbira Freedman is a medical anthropologist at the University of Cambridge, and the founder and director of Birthlight UK. Birthlight is a non-profit organisation, dedicated to enhance the health and wellbeing of women and their families from conception through to the third year, that has more than 1500 teachers worldwide. After spending long periods of fieldwork in Peruvian Amazonia, including two pregnancies and stays with her young family, Francoise was inspired to share the gentle approach to parenting of her Amazonian hosts. As a trained yoga teacher and therapist, Francoise used the idiom of yoga to create an original programmer of movements and nurturing relaxation for mothers to be and new mothers with their babies. A former competitive swimmer and swimming instructor, Francoise developed the Infant Aquatics and Aqua Yoga original programmes, which grew into books, videos and finally the Birthlight training structure for infant swimming teachers. Francoise is the author of several books, that have been translated into 11 languages. She lives in Cambridge, UK.
