Written specifically for parents and health care professionals who have little prior knowledge of ADHD (Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder), this handbook provides a concise introduction and further information on the nature of the disorder. It outlines the symptoms and difficulties associated with the disorder and the sort of treatments and interventions available. The text also offers suggestions of where, or from whom more information and practical help can be found.
The symptoms of ADHD; living with ADHD; epidemiology - how common is ADHD?; aetiology - the causes of ADHD; how is the diagnoses of ADHD made?; the treatment team - for children, young people and their families living with the symptoms and consequences of ADHD; therapeutic interventions - medical treatment; therapeutic interventions - psychological treatments; therapeutic interventions - education; therapeutic interventions - social services and voluntary agencies; prognosis - long term prospects for children with ADHD.
Munden and Arcelus are two child psychiatrists who share a special interest in AD/HD, and who are involved not just in clinical practice, but also in research and training in this field. They therefore have both a theoretical and a practical understanding of the condition, and the AD/HD Handbook benefits considerably from this double expertise. The authors are child and adolescent psychiatrists and the book reflects their medical training and thinking. Yet, unlike some other books based on a medical of disability, the volume does suggest in a number of places that the characteristics of ADHD can, in fact, be strengths rather than deficits in many situations.
