The UK government is taking FGM cases seriously and it is also a major priority for NHS England. But many healthcare professionals and those working with children and young people are still unsure on the procedures and laws around this illegal practise. This handbook aims to address these gaps in knowledge around FGM including diagnosis, implications and management of FGM cases, particularly in relation to national guidance, legal aspects, safeguarding issues and resources, including support groups.Those who use this resource will be able to gain Continuous Professional Development (CPD) points by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).
Dr Sharon Raymond is the named GP for safeguarding children in Croydon. Sharon is also medical lead for NW London primary care out of hours service and safeguarding subject matter expert for Care UK. She runs 'Safeguarding Updates' delivering training on safeguarding children and adults to clinicians across England.
