He has an MSc in Forest and Nature Conservation from Wageningen University in The Netherlands and is a consultant for TRAFFIC in Southeast Asia. He has written and contributed to numerous scientific articles on herpetology. Emerson Y. Sy is a herpetologist based in Manila. He has published two books and numerous scientific papers about amphibian and reptile geographic distribution, natural history, and trade in both international and national journals. Currently, he is the executive director of the Philippine Center for Terrestrial and Aquatic Research (PCTAR), and a consultant of TRAFFIC.
