Written with the cooperation of Matt Johnson and full access to his archives, this is the first biography of one of the titanic figures of the UK alternative rock scene. Active since 1979, The The are perhaps bigger than they have ever been, despite the lack of activity from the band from 2003 to 2017. 2018 saw the return of The The, selling out the Royal Albert Hall in 8 minutes for their first gigs in over fifteen years and announcing a re-issue of their back catalogue. This edition brings the reader up-to-date with an additional chapter cover Matt Johnson's life since 2017.
Neil Fraser was 13 in 1979, and while he was not a fan of all the music written about, he was aware of it thanks to publications like Sounds and the NME, and the John Peel radio show, as well as the record collections of school friends. He has previously written a book looking at the history of East London, Over The Border: The other East End, published by Function Books in 2012.
