A tale of research evolves into a story that began over a century ago. In the depths of the Depression, a German Lutheran daughter of Iowa managed to follow her brothers to Carthage College. After two years, she succumbed to the cultural ideal and left college for marriage. But her Lutheran minister husband proved to be abusive and deserted her at the end of WWII. Struggling through choice and consequence, she built a career and risked a second marriage that had its own surprise twist. Her story brings to life the Gift of Resilience. In the Epilogue, the Rev. Dr. Gary Wilkerson writes the chapter on "The Gift of Resilience." Kimberly Tucker writes the chapter "A Brief Guide to Research Strategies and Sources."
Ann Wagner is professor emerita of dance at St. Olaf College. In her retirement she has been researching and writing family histories. In that role, she continues more than a century-long connection of the Wagner family with Carthage College and the Lutheran church.
