London can be a fairly daunting prospect to the first-time visitor. From how to find somewhere to live to how to pronounce “Leicester Square”, there are many pitfalls waiting to trap the uninitiated. Will you be forced to drink warm beer if you go to your local pub? Is there anything to eat other than fish and chips? Why do people keep tutting at you when you stand on the left side of the escalator? Simple and straightforward, CultureShock! London gives visitors lots of useful help and advice on how to navigate their way through life in one of the world’s truly great cities. From the essentials – how to find a home, navigate public transport, open a bank account, order take-away food – to the slightly odd – was Blackheath really a plague pit? where can I find London’s smallest statue? – the answers you seek will be found within these pages.
Douglas Ridley was born in Worcester but moved to the USA at the age of 5. He spent some of his childhood in California and some in rural Norfolk, England. Douglas has lived a big part of his adult life in London, working in varied positions, including Finance Director (current). When not balancing the books, Douglas likes nothing more than playing tour-guide to visiting friends from all over the world. Although he is used to London’s many foibles, Douglas is still surprised by the sheer diversity of the city he calls home. Joseph Lazaroo hails from Singapore. He has lived in London for many years, but recalls vividly what it felt like to be a stranger in a strange land. An estate agent by profession, Joseph loves to help people find their perfect home. A keen photographer, cinephile and excellent curry-chef, Joseph’s love of London has much to do with the extraordinary variety of foods available. His idea of a perfect Saturday involves Billingsgate Fish Market at the crack of dawn, followed by a leisurely browse through Borough Market.
