CultureShock! San Francisco is the complete guide for those who wish to make sense of the most open and probably the most tolerant city in the United States. San Francisco is the most beautiful--ravishing--cosmopolitan city in the United States, with clean air, sparkling water on three sides, steep hills rising in the middle of the city, and breathtaking views. Quaint cable cars clang up and down the hills, and exotic aromas waft through the streets. People are outgoing and friendly. But although beauty and charm stretch far, they do not tell the entire story. The deeper story unfolds as you come to understand the city and its residents. This book, while offering information for the first-time visitor, also focuses on where tourism ends and where daily life begins. Whether your stay is for a month or two, or a year or two, this essential guide provides the information you will need for a successful stay in the City by the Bay.
Frances Gendlin has held leadership positions in magazine and book publishing; she was Editor and Publisher of Sierra, the magazine of the Sierra Club, a worldwide environmental organization, and was the association’s Director of Public Affairs. As Executive Director of the Association of American University Presses, she represented the 100-member publishing houses to the public and fostered scholarly publishing interests. In 1997, she wrote Rome At Your Door, a widely-read guide to living in that city. In 1998, she wrote Paris At Your Door (Living & Working Abroad: Paris). Her fictional memoir, Paris, Moi, and the Gang: A Memoir ... of Sorts, was published in 2010. CultureShock! San Francisco (2018) is her third edition of this well-received guide.
