Gopee first qualified as a nurse a few decades ago and worked in general surgical nursing before moving on to complete the registered mental health nurse course. Through his nursing career, a combination of clinical experience in primary care and general intensive care nursing has also been complemented by attendance at numerous professional development short and long courses, including various workshops on writing for publication, and also completing his doctorate in continuing professional education at the University of Warwick. By the turn of the millennium, as nurse education programmes became more established in UK universities, this opened up further authoring opportunities. Mentoring and Supervision in Healthcare book, the first edition of which was published in 2007; this book is the fifth edition, with the title and content adjusted. Along the way, Gopee also worked with SAGE to write the Leadership and Management in Healthcare book (up to its third edition), and Practice Teaching in Healthcare and Leading and Managing Healthcare textbooks (published in 2022).
