Performing Culture

A presentation of the strengths and weaknesses of cultural studies, providing a blend of performance and risk theory. John Tulloch explores the need to break down the separation of "high" and "popular" culture studies, starting from the thesis that cultural studies has been over pre-occupied with popular culture. He: gives an account of the "fixations" with theory, method, policy, text, production, audience and the micro-politics of the everyday; revives and extends the idea that cultural meanings are performed, and argues that culture should be studied in terms of performances and performing; and makes extensive and empirically responsible use of case studies to illustrate his argument.
