"Interesting insights into the planning of teaching strategies with some fresh new ideas. Takes Tyler, Taba, Eisner, and Joyce to a new level." -- Daniel Elliott, Professor "Offers explicitly practical strategies for fine-tuning and balancing instruction and assessment. The strategies help assess wise thinking skills and creative thinking skills and match assessment of achievement to broad teaching." -- Jim Morrison, Coordinator of Curriculum Development "The variety and quantity of practical examples can be quickly converted to classroom use." -- Phyllis Milne, Associate Director of Curriculum and Student Achievement "This book encourages teachers to go beyond traditional instruction designed for narrow kinds of thinking and testing." -- Sharon Kane, Professor "Offers a great opportunity for teachers to reflect on their practice in a constructive way. The book serves well as a schoolwide professional development initiative in learning communities and offers opportunities for teachers to tweak their instruction for better understanding and meaningful learning." -- Susan Leeds, Science Curriculum Leader "This is a blockbuster of a book. It allows teachers to follow standards, but provides space for them to develop students' wisdom, intelligence, and creativity (and of course success). Teachers will be free to teach without being limited to textbook formats. Both teachers and students will come to understand themselves and their values better." -- William E. Doll, Jr., Professor Emeritus "This book presents a model to help teachers teach content while teaching important skills that make the content meaningful. The authors explain and give examples of how to apply their model and explicitly make connections to assessment and state standards. Using this model will enrich the education of students and fill the enormous gap created by high-stakes tests and the accountability movement." -- Alcione N. Ostorga, Assistant Professor
