Mark Bertram, an architect and civil servant, spent most of his career working on the design and management of British embassy buildings. After his retirement as Head of the Overseas Estate Department at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office he wrote the definitive history of British embassy and consular buildings, entitled Room for Diplomacy, in 2011. He is one of Halsey Ricardos great grandchildren.
