Description
In Material Sound, Caleb Kelly joins other sound studies scholars, including Steve Goodman, Nina Sun Eidsheim, and Stefan Helmreich, who are collectively pushing against the boundaries of the discipline. However, his foregrounding of post-1960s art and media practices in this study is quite unique, and challenges the ocularcentrism in this area."-Ming-Yuen S. Ma, Professor of Media Studies, Pitzer College, CA.
Material Sound cogently explains how sound-based artwork, created before the 1980s as visual art, grew to be fully accepted as contemporary art. Caleb Kelly is the knowledgeable scholar who understands the complex, transnational history of sound as art. His book is a must read by everyone interested in the multifaceted, always upgrading field. "-Barbara London, curator and writer.
