He holds an M.A. in sociology from McMaster University in Canada and an MPIA and Ph.D. in sociology from the University of Pittsburgh. Carla D. Coates is an associate professor and the chair of the Department of Criminal Justice at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. She holds a Ph.D. in sociology and Africana studies from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, an M.S. in cybersecurity technology from the University of Maryland Global Campus, and an M.A. in criminal justice from Norfolk State University.
